I Know, It's Only a Scinece. （追記：解剖学は科学か？）

誤解を招きたくないのであえて申し添えておくが，解剖学が科学であろうとなかろうと，その価値とは些かの関係もない。科学は学問の方法，しかもその「一つ」に過ぎない。冒頭に挙げた言葉*1は量子力学の大家にしてノーベル物理学賞受賞者ファインマンの講義録から引用させて頂いたものだが，次の章のIntroductionで彼は学生にこう語りかける。

We must, incidentally, make it clear from the bigining that if a thing is not a science, it is not necessarily bad. For example, love is not a science. So, if something is said not to be a science, it does not mean that there is something wrong with it; it just means that it is not a science.

素晴らしいでしょう，ファインマンさん！こんな教科書や講義が，医学にはあるだろうか？あった！

解剖学に限らず，医学に科学は不可欠な要素だが，科学的であることが医学の本質ではない。人の健康に資することが医学の本質である。既存の科学的知識で説明がつこうとつかまいと，「効くならする」のが医学だ。ただ，そこに留まらず「なぜ，どのように，どれほど」効くのかを検証しようとするところに，「医術」ならぬ「医学」がある。

最終講義を閉じるにあたり，私は先覚者の残された次の名言を学生たちへの贈りものとした。
「書かれた医学は過去の医学であり，目前に悩む患者の中に明日の医学の教科書の中身がある」。*3

Philosophers have said before that one of the fundamental requisites of science is that whenever you set up the same conditions, the same thing must happen. This is simply not true, it is not a fundamental condition of science.
The sole test of the validity of any idea is experiment. If we are told that the same experiment will always produce the same result, that is all very well, but if when we try it, it does not, then it does not. We just have to take what we see, and then formulate all the rest of our ideas in terms of our actual experience.
